Complete Streets
Complete streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders. The current focus for beautifulPB is PB Pathways, a network of safe neighborhood routes encouraging people to walk, bike, scooter or skate to their destinations with traffic calming measures and other features to improve safety.
What are the PB Pathways?
PB Pathways is a network of streets that were identified as routes with lower vehicle traffic that are more suitable for active mobility than other streets in the community. They are intended to support safe and comfortable local travel by all modes (walking, biking, driving, scooting, and more). The adoption of the PB Pathways network lay the groundwork for future traffic calming and mobility enhancements along these routes.
The original PB Pathways route approved by the PB Planning Group, in collaboration with beautifulPB and other community partners.
PB Pathways Development
In 2015, in-pavement surfboard decals and wayfinding signage was installed along the Phase 1 PB Pathways. Curb ramps and enhanced crosswalks were also installed in some locations.
In February 2016, Class II bike lanes were added to Cass Street as part of a street repaving project, further enhancing this portion of the PB Pathways network.
In 2020, Diamond Street was closed to through traffic as part of the City’s Covid-19 Slow Streets program. The PB Planning Group voted to continue to program in 2022, and quick-build traffic diverters were installed to pilot a design to deter through vehicle traffic while allowing bikes and activity mobility to pass though. While ultimately the diverters were removed from Diamond Street, this is still considered Phase 2 of PB Pathways, and Diamond Street continues to be an important part of the PB Pathways network.
In 2024, beautifulPB and the PB Community Parking District led a series of workshops gathering community input and support for additional traffic calming measures along key routes of the network to be included in Phase 3 of the PB Pathways project.
The PB Community Parking District approved the Phase 3 PB Pathways routes and recommended interventions in September 2024. We are now in the process of identifying funding sources to implement these improvements!
